Through the Ivy & Jane Fund, Kent Community Foundation supported a young carer, M, who helps care for his younger sibling with complex additional needs.
M provides daily emotional and practical support at home, which can be demanding and leaves little time for himself. As a result, he has not previously had the opportunity to access activities outside the home or spend time with peers.
Our support
Working with Imago Kent Young Carers, an activity was identified that M felt passionate about but could not access due to financial barriers.
A grant from Kent Community Foundation enabled M to take part in an archery beginners’ course, covering membership and essential equipment.
The impact
The difference was immediate. For the first time in a long while, M had the chance to step away from his caring responsibilities and focus on something just for him. Within just the first week, he was already achieving milestones and had even been put forward for competitions.
M, young carer:
"I am very happy with my new bow. It makes me feel like I don’t have to miss out on something I love. Thank you so much for my bow."
M's Mum:
"M got his bow today and he is so happy with it. He now feels like he’s a part of something without his sister. He finally has something to do away from his sister that makes him happy. Alex from the archery club has been so helpful from the get-go and today he helped M set his bow up. They are so supportive down there with everything. I’ve never known M to feel like he belongs like this…We are so grateful for this."
CYP Support Coordinator for Imago Kent Young Carers:
"I can’t thank Kent Community Foundation and the archery club enough for the opportunity they’ve given M to reignite his passion and excel in a sport he loves."
