Remember A Charity Week - 11th-17th September 2017

11th September 2017

Remember A Charity Week is an annual awareness week designed to encourage more people to consider leaving a gift to charity when writing a Will.

According to Remember a Charity, three quarters of Britons regularly give to charity in their lifetimes, yet only 7% currently include a charity when writing a Will. Gifts in Wills create more than £2 billion each year. Without this income, many charities would simply not exist and others would have to cut crucial services.

Kent Community Foundation have developed our bespoke Charitable Legacy Service to offer donors an innovative way of actively supporting their local community beyond their lifetime.

The legacy can then be invested in an endowment fund, which would create a lasting legacy for the local community in perpetuity – a gift which keeps on giving - as the endowment then generates an annual income that is available for local grants year after year after year. Dependent on government programmes at the time, there may also be match funding available to be added to the fund, and KCF would claim that on your behalf.

For those who do not want to establish an endowment fund, there is also the option to create what we call a flow-through fund. Donations are not invested but are spent down for immediate impact in our Kent communities, usually over a defined period of time, which we agree with the donor.

This Legacy Service enables you to tell us exactly how you wish your charitable legacy to be put to good use in the local community. And it couldn’t be simpler.

This process gives you peace of mind that your legacy to the local community will be effectively managed by KCF, according to your wishes, in perpetuity if that is what you want. Unlike other charitable legacies that are spent either immediately or within a year or two, your legacy can be invested as an endowment fund that will generate income to support local causes year after year, so that your lasting gift to the people and communities of Kent will be remembered forever.

Our Charitable Legacy Service has two simple steps:

1. You simply leave a straightforward charitable legacy to Kent Community Foundation in your will.

2. You create a 'Letter of Wishes', such as this sample shows, to tell us exactly how you wish KCF to manage your legacy, including:

Whether you want to use your gift to set up a legacy fund in your own name or other name of your choosing

Particular causes you want to prioritise, such as disadvantaged young people

The geographical reach of your gift e.g. Kent-wide or a particular local area

The names of any specific charities you would like to support, such as your local hospice

Whether you would like family or friends involved in grant-making decisions

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss setting up a named legacy fund, please contact our Development Team by email or on 01303 814 500. All discussions are without obligation and will remain confidential.
