About Thanet Iceberg Project

Established in 2018, Thanet Iceberg Project helps individuals and households across Thanet to combat the causes of poverty whilst overcoming its symptoms. They run three projects, The Lounge, where the community can come together for a drink and a snack, The Loft, where pre-loved furniture and small household items are given to those who need them and Crossroads to offer advice, support and where needed, practical assistance.

The funded project and its benefits

£5,000 was donated to the group to support the purchase of basic items for Thanet families living in deprivation.

This donation was part of an ongoing project to build and distribute single beds and mattresses to children across Thanet who do not have anywhere adequate to sleep. Across the whole project Thanet Iceberg have made in excess of 150 beds for children and young people who previously shared a bed with siblings, sleeping on the sofa or even the floor. Volunteers have been involved in sourcing and delivering the beds and have seen first-hand the benefit to the children and their families. This funding has allowed the group to make sure that all of these disadvantaged children have a safe and warm place to sleep.

"Seeing a child running around the front room singing, "I've got a bed, I've got a bed" is the overriding image that I will take away from this project. We stopped children from sleeping on the floor, top and tailing with siblings, sleeping with their parents. This project has been possibly the most worthwhile that we have ever done." Alexander Roarke, Thanet Iceberg Project

Beneficiary stories

One social worked who asked for a bed explained that in her client family a 14 year old boy was sharing with his mum!

Another family had just moved into a flat in Cliftonville but it had bed bugs and they lost everything. Once de-fumigated we were able to give the whole family new beds.
